Land availability and utilization for different purposes
The Institute is having 220 ha farm area. Out of this 13.64 ha farm area is at Amboli, Sindhudurg district and remaining 207 ha area at Pune district - Manjari (56 ha), Vasantdada (35.6 ha) and Naigaon (114.8 ha).
About more than 50% area is under cultivation from the available land (220ha), out of which 30% area used for conducting various field experiments, breeding program, breeder seeds nurseries, and field demonstration trials of various sections of Agriculture Division and rest of 40% area used for green mannuring. In situ incorporation of green mannuring crops improves the soil fertility and productivity. Remaining 30% area is kept fallow every year. Fallowing reduces infestation of weeds & pest due to repeated tillage operations in the fallow field. Research work is a continuous activity of Agriculture Division hence the farm section has been allotting more than 25 ha land for conducting various agricultural research activities. A Sugarcane Breeding Centre is established at Amboli for varietals improvement.
