The Agronomy Section was established in 1980. The major activity of the section is to raise Breeder’s Seed Nursery of released sugarcane varieties in Maharashtra State by using either sugarcane setts or micropropagated plantlets for planting the seed nursery.The research emphasis is mainly on standardization of packages of practices for new sugarcane varieties, study on different herbicides in sugarcane cultivation, mechanization in sugarcane crop, development of agronomic practices for micropropagated plantlets and sett planted crop. It is also engaged in the development of an ideal VSI farm for research, seed nursery and for demonstration of new technologies. Agronomic trials are being conducted for different sugarbeet varieties to determine the spacing, planting layout, proper sowing time, fertilizer dose, water requirement and development of package of practices for sugar beet cultivation for Tropical area.
