Department of Environmental Sciences was established in association with Alchohol Technology department in the year 1992. Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, initially recognized the academic post-graduate course of two years.

From academic year 2008-2009, the Institute availed an affiliation with University of Pune for M.Sc. course in Environmental Sciences. Also the Environmental Sciences laboratory was recognized since 1992 for Ph.D. degree.

The department guides sugar and allied industries in prevention and overall pollution control, it also provides services in the area of Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), in which the monitoring of air, water, noise, ecological parameters etc is carried out, representation of clients at the State and Central Government level and assist in conducting public hearing is also carried out. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), soil, water, waste water analysis, water treatment etc is done.

The department provides various environmental services viz. Environmental Clearance, Environmental Audits, Analytical services to the sugar and allied byproduct industries and also guides them in prevention and control of pollution. The department carries out research related to the treatment and disposal of distillery spentwash.
