Research and Development

a

Under Applied and Industrial Research and Development (R&D), Sugar Technologists work hard with objectives to review the research work, finding research areas in sugar processing, undertaking projects/ sanctioned projects and promote new technologies. In last decade, the Sugar Technology department completed 24 projects and working on numerous projects, few of them are depicted below,

Ongoing Research Projects
Investigation of flow behavior of various process equipments in sugar industry by using Radiotracers.
Digital Polarimeter (Sucromat)SpectrophotometerKarl Fisher InstrumentBinocular Microscope with Digital Camera AttachmentBinocular Microscope UnitSucroflex for Sugar Colour measurement in Solid State
Development of Automatic Direct Cane Sampling and Analysis System (DCSAS) for cane payment on sucrose content.
Recirculation of sugar and non-sugars in pan boiling process.
Development of Analytical Method for Determination of turbidity in syrup and boiling house products.
Syrup clarification by phosphotation process.
Field trial of short retention juice sulphiter.
Comparative study of various analytical methods for sugar color measurement.
Causes and remedy for mud trouble in sugar industry.
Sugar fortification with vitamin ‘A’.
Effect of lead in pol measurement.
On line color measurement.
Study of steam saving in sugar factories.
High pol (sugar in cane) raw sugar production.
On-line weighing system with gravity type flow of sugar with minimum cost.
An independent and combined processing of low sugar alongwith cane juice.
Development of new three and half massecuite (A2 massecuite) boiling scheme for reduction sugar losses in final molasses.
Development of analytical method for aperture determination of Mean Aperture (MA) and crystal variation (CV) in massecuite samples.
Considering increasing demand for sugar, VSI in the last 4-5 years conducted trials of sugar beet cultivation (sugar beet pilot project) at farms of the Institute and same other sugar factories. Based on the observation, a 100 TBD pilot plant got installed at M/s Samarth S.S.K.Ltd., Jalna (India) and successful trials have been done.

List of Completed Research and Development Projects
Computer controlled Juice flow stabilisation system.
Development of Individual mill extraction method.
An independent & combined processing of raw sugar along with cane juice
High pol raw Sugar production.
Beet extraction and processing with cane juice.
Trials of low retention juice sulphitor.
Development of new boiling scheme.
Development of method for of CV and MA.
Ethanol from sweet sorghum.
Different alternatives for ethanol production.
Development of new turbidity method for boiling house products.
