Plant Breeding Objectives

The following are the important research and extension objectives -
1. Breeding of new sugarcane varieties combining high yield and sucrose content, having resistance to drought and salinity adapted to the different agro climatic regions of the Maharashtra State.
2. All India Coordinated Research Project on Sugarcane breeding trials for locating the most suitable varieties developed by the research centers of the Penninsular zone.
3. Sugarcane germplasm expansion, evaluation, characterization, utilization and cytogenetical analysis of distant hybrids.
4. To guide the sugarcane growers and sugar mills for adoption of varietal planting planning and popularization of new sugarcane varieties through teaching, training, rallies and demonstration in coordination with programme coordinators.
